Vacation Rental Details

Welcome to Hale ‘Ohi’a Lehua! The ‘Ohi’a is our State Tree. In Hawaiian folklore ‘Ohi’a was a handsome warrior and Lehua was his betrothed. Pele, the Hawaiian Volcano Goddess, fell in love with ‘Ohi’a, but he turned down Pele’s marriage proposal so she turned him into a twisted tree, and Lehua was heartbroken. Lehua was turned into a flower on the ‘Ohi’a tree so the two lovers would always be together. The ‘Ohi’a tree thrives despite the volcanic climate, and is one of the first things to grow on new lava flows after they cool.

This brand new, beautifully decorated 3 bedroom 2 bath home is the perfect location for sightseeing the east side of The Big Island. Centrally located near the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park in Mauna Loa Shores subdivision, and only about 30 minutes to Hilo, you are convenient to all of the sights and sounds that the east side of the Big Island has to offer. From here, swimming and snorkeling in Punalu’u Black Sands Beach or in Hilo is a 30-minute drive in either direction, and the Volcanoes National Park is practically in your backyard. Hale ‘Ohi’a Lehua sits perfectly on its private, quiet landscaped 1/2 acre with citrus and other fruit trees in the backyard, and the native Hapu’u ferns surround the edge of the property. Enjoy BBQ’ing outside and the crisp mountain air at 3500’ elevation. The large lanai is the perfect place to relax with a cup of coffee or tea in the morning, or a great book in the afternoon. Cozy up to the gas fireplace in the living room on those chilly Volcano evenings! Hale ‘Ohi’a Lehua sleeps 6-7 comfortably with a regular king bed in the master, a queen in the 2nd bedroom, and a twin & double bunkbed in the 3rd bedroom. The master bedroom has its own large private bathroom with a huge walk-in shower. The hale also has all of the modern amenities that you would want in a vacation rental home including a large kitchen, DISH TV, and washer and dryer. And the best part, it’s all brand new!

What to Pack:

The Island of Hawaii, aka the Big Island, boasts over 4,000 square miles and 10 different climate zones, within which are many micro climate zones!  You may think that packing your favorite swimsuit and slippers (flip flops) is enough, but not true if you plan on doing any hiking or sightseeing around the island.  Hawaii Volcanoes National Park can get quite chilly with temperatures dropping down to the low 40s at night, sometimes lower, so do bring your favorite warm pajamas and at least a light jacket. It actually snows often on Mauna Kea, but they close those roads whenever there are blizzard conditions present.  If you plan on doing a lava hike, you should consider bringing your hiking boots, as you’ll want good ankle support for this 1/2-day or more experience.  At the very least, bring a solid pair of tennis shoes and don’t attempt the lava hike in flip flops.
